Functional Equivalence in the E-C Translation of Desperate Housewives

Abstract
Functional Equivalence (F-E), also known as Dynamic Equivalence (D-E), is put forward by Eugene A. Nida (November 11, 1914 – August 25, 2011). F-E aims at atmost“naturalness” of e*pression. A D-E translation is directed primarily towards equivalence of response rather than equivalence of form. This paper places this principle in the conte*t of Desperate Housewives, a well-received American TV series throughout the world, and contends that F-E is suitable for the translation of television programs. Based on the theory, the translation helps understand Desperate Housewives by assessing Chinese idioms and figurative language that reflect some special features of Chinese e*pressions. Introduction
The paper offers an analysis of the validity and functionality of Nida’s F-E in the conte*t of Desperate Housewives. The paper is composed of four parts: 1. a brief introduction to Desperate Housewives; 2. a brief introduction of F-E; 3. the applicability of F-E in this TV series; 4. conclusion. I propose that we need to have a quick picture of Desperate Housewives before we analyze the applicability of F-E.
Desperate Housewives is an American television comedy dramedy-mystery series created by Marc Cherry and produced by ABC Studios and Cherry Productions. It aired on ABC from October 3, 2004 to May 13, 2012.
The main setting of the show is Wisteria Lane [see: figure 1, 2, 3], a street in the fictional American town of Fairview in the fictional Eagle State. The show follows the lives of four housewives, seen through the eyes of their dead neighbor Mary Alice Young, who committed suicide une*pectedly in the very first episode.
The storyline covers the womens lives between 2004 and 2012. To be precise, they are not simple stay-at-home housewives. Instead, they have their own career. Lynette used to be a big advertising consultant. Gaby used to be a fashion model and gave up her career for her bad relationship with colleagues. Susan is a teacher of art in a primary school. Bree is a famous cookbook writer and a successful caterer in the community. They have one thing in common. They all work through domestic struggles and family life, while facing the secrets, crimes and mysteries hidden b ……(未完,全文共20184字,當(dāng)前僅顯示3630字,請(qǐng)閱讀下面提示信息。收藏《畢業(yè)論文:Functional Equivalence in the E-C Translation of Desperate Housewives》
