Translation of Pun Subtitles with a Case of 2 Broke Girls

Abstract: Pun refers to a form of a word play which suggests two or more meanings by e*ploiting multiple meanings of words, or of similar-sounding words for an intended humorous or rhetorical effect. It is widely used in English sitcoms. Constrained by many elements, however, it is difficult for translators to convey the original meanings to the audience. This paper attempts to review previous studies on the pun subtitling, summarize the principles and goals and categorize several pun translation strategies in the perspective of Dirk Delabastita’s theory of pun translation through a case study on the sitcom 2 Broke Girls. The paper draws a conclusion that Delabastita’s theory should be widely adopted in pun subtitling in order to make Chinese audience achieve a better understanding of foreign cultures.

1. Introduction
In the time of digitalization and globalization, the economical and cultural communications among countries all over the world become much more frequent. Since implementing the reform and opening-up system, a large amount of foreign audiovisual products, mainly in the forms of movies and TV programs, have flooded into the Chinese market. Nowadays, more and more people are interested in foreign movies and TV series. Sitcom, as one of the most humorous and entertained TV products, enjoys a lot of popularity in China. It serves not only a way of entertainment, but also a means for the Chinese audience learning foreign cultures. However, given that language barriers, many audiences who cannot understand foreign languages very well must need some assistance in order to have a better appreciation in the sitcoms. Subtitle translation is one of the effective solutions. The quality of such translation has been increasingly concerned.
As one of the most distinctive features of sitcoms, pun plays an indispensable role in creating a humorous situation. Nevertheless, constraint by many elements, it is difficult for translators to convey the original meanings to the audience. Given that there are fewer e*act corresponding equivalents between two languages, it has been widely argued whether pun is translatable or not. The traditional view is that pun translation is not worthy of time and efforts to study. However, Dirk Delabastita holds an opposite view that since every language is assumed to be capable of making puns, it cannot be denied that interlingual processing of puns are possible.
